Hockey Happiness

Last night was a night to be remembered!!  Our Chicago Blackhawks are the 2010 Stanley Cup Champions!!  I don’t think I have ever seen my girls this excited!  They credit their dad and Grandpa with turning them into hockey fans VERY early in life!!  And as you can see, we all GREATLY enjoyed sharing this history-making moment with each other!!

Really happy fans!!

Anxiously watching the game....

Three generations of loyal Chicago Blackhawk fans!

Celebrating the cup!!

Kissing "the cup" with my sweetie!!

Living the dream….

I can’t begin to explain the mounting excitement that has enveloped our home over the last number of weeks.  In Chicago, we know what it’s like to be this close.

Our beloved Chicago Cubs were just five outs away from the World Series in 2003 when Steve Bartmann reached over the wall and sent into motion one the worst team sports’ chokes of all time.

Steve Bartman Incident

Of course, there are some who will tell you that Steve Bartman was just a natural consequence of the Cubs’ real problem.  It was the curse.

the goat

Well, curse or not, the Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908.  Oh, they’ve been close a few times, but once in the post-season, the Chicago Cubs just can’t seem to bring home the big prize.

Likewise, fans of the Chicago Blackhawks have seen their share of disappointment.  However, now, firmly entrenched in the Rocky Wirtz era of Chicago hockey, the Blackhawks seem destined to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup.  Last year they were close…but, alas, Chicago fans once again tasted the bitter taste of “almost”.  But this year, in the playoffs for the second straight year, the young and talented Blackhawk “dream team” has rolled over its opponent in three straight series. Now on to the Flyers.

TheFinals

Tomorrow, the Chicago Blackhawks play Game One of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals.  And for the next two weeks, everything else will cease to matter in our home.  My three daughters have been fans since they were little girls.  They have dreamed of this moment for half their lives!  (Cub fans have dreamed slightly longer, but…oh well!)

Of course, I want the Hawks to win.  But nothing would make me happier than to see my girls (and their little brother) have this moment!

Some people say it’s just a game.  But right at the moment, I’m not so sure!

Happy New Year

Dear Friends and Family:

Here we are at the start of 2009, wondering what happened to 2008! Here are a few highlights from the past year in the Difino household!

Jim and Linda stayed busy with family, work, and church responsibilities. As the chairman of the deacons at Lombard Gospel Chapel, Jim spent most of the year heavily involved in our recently completed building project. During the spring and summer months, Linda’s work took her to homeschool conventions all over the U.S, and copywriting, tutoring, homeschool consulting, and babysitting enabled her to work from home during the remainder of the year. Sunday school, AWANA, music ministry, and the regular demands of homeschooling and family life kept both of us busy. But by far, the biggest highlight of our year was a summer trip to Tennessee to celebrate Linda’s folks’ 50th wedding anniversary. Mom and Dad, along with all the kids, spouses, and grandkids, spent a whole week vacationing together in the beautiful Smoky Mountains! What a wonderful time we had hiking, splashing in mountain streams, and relaxing on our big front porch overlooking the mountains!

Darcy, 21, will soon begin her final semester at Northern Illinois University. She just completed her 1st grade student-teaching assignment and had a wonderful time! She is living at home this year and has gotten quite involved in ministry and social life at the chapel. After one more semester of classes, she will graduate in May. We’re all hoping and praying that Darcy will be able to find a teaching job that will keep her close to home!!

Janna, 20, is also living at home right now while pursuing her college degree in a slightly less traditional manner. She is earning “credits by examination” and has accumulated 63 college credits in the past 14 months! She hopes to earn her bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences by December of 2009! Janna also babysits regularly for a local family and is enjoying getting more involved with the college and career group at the chapel.

Nina, 18, is in her final year of high school (still homeschooled!) and is considering what the Lord might have in store for her future. She went on a youth group missions trip this summer that the Lord used to increase her interest in missions and ministry. It will be exciting to see how the Lord leads her in the days ahead. Currently, watching hockey and enjoying time spent with friends from youth group are the highlights of Nina’s life!

Jimmy, 5, will begin (officially) Kindergarten in the fall. He is already “doing school” several days each week and loves it…most of the time! His current obsession with roller coasters and fast rides keeps him screaming through the house at breakneck speed! A Christmas trip to Stormy Lake included MANY fast rides down a snowy hill on a tube! He LOVED it!

All in all, 2008 was a wonderful year spent enjoying God’s rich provision for our family. We are especially thankful to him for the friends and family that he has blessed us with!

May God richly bless you in 2009

A Flashback for Kellieann: Of Babies and Baseball

I was moved with compassion yesterday while visiting Kellieann’s Blog.  She’s got 8 weeks left in her pregnancy, and is wondering if she’s gonna make it to the end!  I am feeling her pain.  Her post took me back. It was five years ago that I was right where she is…just a few uncomfortable weeks away from having a baby.  The Cubs were in the playoffs then, too…indeed, they almost made it to the World Series! (Remember Steve Bartman?)

Photobucket

Well, five years ago, during my less-than-wonderful pregnancy with little "shock and awe", my just-out-of-med-school doctor regularly responded to my many pregnancy complaints with "You’re not as young as you used to be" and "Don’t expect it to be as easy as it was when you were in your 20’s."  Wise guy.

So, having "been there and done that", I thought I might try to encourage Kellieann with a few additions to her exercise in positive thinking.
  • "Babies are easier when they’re on the inside."  This little bit of wisdom was uttered by the 6-year old daughter of a very pregnant friend of mine.  I asked her if she was excited for her baby brother to be born. Her response? "Nope, babies are easier when they’re on the inside."  You know, there’s a lot of truth to that!

  • You’ve got the best ever excuse to sit with your feet up and read, listen to music, eat bonbons, watch the Cubs win the world series….whatever makes you happy! You won’t have this privilege again for a long time…if ever!

  • I know you’re not quite as old as I was, but it’s possible that this will be your last pregnancy. It’s a miracle from beginning to end. Don’t wish it away.

  • And of course, before too long you’ll be sitting in the hospital looking like this:

Hang in there, my friend….the biggest prize is going to be here VERY soon!!

Homecoming: A First for this Homeschool Family

My youngest daughter, a senior in highschool, went to Homecoming on Saturday night with a large group of kids from our youth group. (Nina is the one in dark red.) I guess the pictures below help answer a critically important question homeschoolers must answer regarding socialization and the homeschooled child.

"But if you homeschool, won’t your kids miss out on homecoming?"

You can see Nina is a miserably lonely homeschooled  girl with absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday night!  Maybe I should send her to school!

Starting Over

This week I begin my 18th year of homeschooling.  Even as I sit here typing away, I’m waiting for my 18th box of curriculum to arrive in the mail. (in the early years I NEVER would have started this late!!)  In the years since we first began this journey, we’ve lived in six houses in two states.  I’ve used materials from more than ten different curriculum companies and gone on more field trips than I care to count.  I’ve watched two of my students go on (successfully!) to college and am about to launch the third into life beyond homeschool.  With just a few credits needed to graduate, this should be a pretty easy year for us.  And with that I should be done.  Should be.

–Flashback–

Most people remember March 19, 2003 as the start of the “shock and awe” campaign in Iraq.  We remember that date for a very different reason.  Oh, it was “shock and awe” alright—but of a very different kind.

I woke up that day feeling just a teensy bit queasy.  I was just a couple of days late, but that’s not all that surprising for a woman skipping merrily down the road toward “the change.”  Just the same, I thought I’d better check it out.  I still have the little stick that confirmed my never-imagined fears!

Yep.

Positive.

Pregnant.

So I stared at that little “+” sign, silently willing it to fade away and whispering the only thought my mind would allow. “Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no.”  Of course my next thought was to call my husband, never thinking that perhaps it would be wise to prepare him for the most unexpected of news.  Surprisingly, he accepted my words calmly and logically.

“No, honey.  You’re not pregnant.  It’s just menopause.”

It seemed at the time that I had just two options.  I could allow him to enjoy his self-protective fantasy for a few days, or I could burst his bubble quickly and painlessly.  I chose the latter.

“Honey, menopause causes many strange, even inexplicable signs and symptoms, but I really don’t think it causes positive pregnancy tests.”

Later that same day, the Americans dropped some really big bombs in Iraq.

–Back to the present–

So here I am.  I should be starting the final lap of the homeschool phase of my life, but instead I find myself crouching at the starting line.  Again.  The books just arrived.  Little “shock and awe” is sitting on the living room floor excitedly looking everything over, imploring me “Mommy, can you teach me now?”  I really didn’t think I’d ever be here again.

13 more years of books, schedules, lesson plans, records, field trips, frustrations, and joys.

When he graduates I’ll be 58.

Is it too early for a drink?

Happy Birthday, Darcy!!

How did this happen?

Our first baby–the little girl who first made us a Mommy and Daddy–just turned 21!!  Since the first moment we laid eyes on her, and every moment since, she has been a joy and a delight!  Her sweet spirit and stubborn determination have combined to make her a force to be reckoned with.  Her love for the Lord and her desire to serve him have clearly become the guiding force of her life…and as parents, we could not ask for anything better than that!  We can hardly wait to see what the Lord has for her in the days and years ahead.

Now for a little stroll down memory lane with our "dark beauty"….

HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY, DARCY!!
